Four out of the five years I spent in high school saw me covered in some serious teen acne. For anyone who has ever suffered from acne, I don’t need to describe the emotional burden it comes with – no matter what age you are. In December, TMP asked our readers over 35yrs in age what their biggest skin concern currently was. Almost everyone who answered mentioned acne.
This comes as no surprise to me considering how much pollution and free radicals we are constantly exposed to. As global warming increases, sun exposure is still the biggest culprit when it comes to skin inflammation and you probably already know that sunscreen, now more than ever, should be your number 1 skin product investment.
– Acne is an inflammatory disease with micro inflammation being the root cause of the acne cycle.
-Effective cleansing can enhance absorption of the acne actives by approximately 9%.
-80% of all people will suffer from acne between the ages of 11 and 30.
-20% of these cases will persist well past the age of 30.
-Oily skin is also often accompanied by blemishes (pimples), which make skin extremely prone to dark marks and pigmentation when exposed to the sun’s UV rays.
-Beyond the physical scars, acne can also leave you with a diminished self-esteem.
The Product Promise
Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Oil Control has launched a new Skin Renewal Treatment, which starts to visibly improve acne-prone skin just after 2 weeks of regular use. They have also launched a Micellar Water for those that prefer to cleanse without water. The range effectively controls oil and shine, reduces blemishes and soothes irritations while helping to prevent new blemishes from appearing. The two products used together regularly promise to keep your acne at bay in just two weeks.
How I used it
Every evening before washing my face with a cleanser, I used the Micellar Water on a cotton pad to remove my makeup. Micellar Water is basically a waterless cleanser but I’m one of those people who don’t feel completely clean unless some rinsing is involved. It’s a psychological thing as Micellar Water in general is pretty effective as a cleanser and it doesn’t disturb your skin’s PH balance or strip away at its barrier function. I’m just a creature of habit. I wait about half a minute before applying the Skin Renewal Treatment all over my face as I would a night cream. The flare up of pimples is only around my jaw area but I wasn’t leaving anything to chance! On application, I definitely felt the cream sting a little bit on some areas of my face. Because my skin is quite resilient, this never makes me panic unless it persists. In this case, the stinging sensation lasted only a few seconds. In my mind, sting = active ingredients = product is effective. I have to say, though, this isn’t scientific fact and if your skin is sensitive, try the product on a small patch of skin first before applying all over. You can also use the cream as an intensive treatment for a short period of time on just the affected areas, especially if your skin can’t handle nightly use.
In the morning, I use a mild cleanser and lightly pat skin with a dry face towel before applying a hydrating serum followed by a day moisturizer. You could just use the Micellar Water in the morning, especially if, like me, you used a rinse-off cleanser the night before. Once the moisturizer settles, I follow it with the Eucerin Oil Control Sun Gel-Cream SPF 50+ – the first sunscreen I ever came across that has the perfect gel texture and leaves no residue. Perfect for oily skin. I didn’t use the Skin Renewal Treatment in the morning as it is recommended for night time only.
What is surprising about this Skin Renewal Treatment is that despite the chemical exfoliation, it does not at all dry out the skin. In fact straight after application, my skin felt softened, comforted and clean. Waking up the next morning after the first use, I couldn’t believe the results! The blemishes definitely appeared to be less inflamed. The painful bumps that were threatening to be full blown zits by morning had disappeared. After a week of nightly use, I am only left with the dark scarring from the blemishes and no fresh breakouts. I hope to see the dark marks go away after another week.
Why it works
The formulation contains a powerful 10% Hydroxy Complex, which works as a highly effective exfoliator because it safely balances concentrated amounts of some of the best acids as active ingredients: Alpha (Glycolic), Beta (Salicylic) and Polyhydroxy (Gluconolactone) acids. This combination has a strong antibacterial effect and is very suitable for blemish-prone and oily skin.
