If you’re concerned with fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, dull skin, uneven skin tone, clogged pores, saggy skin – look no further than a cream with active retinol. What is retinol, I hear you ask? It’s pure vitamin A that acts as an antioxidant penetrating deep into the skin to stimulate cell renewal and improve overall skin health.
Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair 1%
Because I’ve never used retinol on my skin before, I started with the Dermalogica Retinol Repair 0.5%, which the brand has had on the market for a while. This helped to build my skin’s tolerance levels to the ingredient before I could graduate to the newly launched and stronger Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair 1%. I was advised to mix my retinol cream with a buffer cream and only use it at night as retinol can sensitize the skin to sun exposure, which can result in pigmentation. So you know I was going wild with the sunscreen every day because I’m not about the pigmentation life.
How I used it.
I’ve read many things about retinol before and even though my skin is quite resilient (I’ve never had a problem trying most things on it) from what I read, retinol was supposed to be quite hectic. I imagined my face peeling from the first use and me having to explain to everyone that it’s a phase. So I started with the Dermalogica Retinol Repair 0.5% mixed with three parts buffer cream every second night. could have used it every single night if my skin concerns were more urgent – but luckily this is more of a prevention move. If you have deep wrinkles, extremely dull skin or enlarged pores that are quite visible, then go ahead and use it nightly.
On the first application I felt some tingle, which always gets me excited because it makes me feel like whatever I’m applying has active ingredients. The tingle in this case was quite superficial (anything harsher and I would have been worried) and it passed quickly. Immediately after application, my skin had a glowing sheen and immediately felt taut. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to apply my night cream over it or this was acting as a night cream – so I just skipped my night cream because in my mind I didn’t want to “dilute” the retinol.
Now let me start by saying there are very few products that have given me visible results after the first use, which is why I was surprised to wake up to very obvious results. My skin texture had definitely improved and my skin felt really soft with a definite glow. By the second week the deep lines below my cheeks had softened , the post inflammatory dark marks had faded almost completely and it’s difficult to explain but I just looked younger.
After two weeks I changed to the newer 1% Overnight Retinol Repair, skipped the buffer cream because I felt like my skin could take it and used my usual, thick night cream over the retinol cream for some comfort. Because I was using it without the buffer cream, I decided to stick to the every second night routine.
I am now the newest and biggest fan of retinol. I just can’t believe it took me this long to try it.
Note: Retinol is quite an unstable ingredient, which can lose its potency when exposed to direct sunlight so you will find that it is always packaged in opaque containers. Make sure you store any retinol product in a cold, dark place. Dermalogica’s Overnight Retinol Repair 1% has micro encapsulation technology that helps preserve the retinol potency in this product so you don’t have to worry about its potency being lost or diminished.
Important: Retinol isn’t for everyone. There is no one size fits all when it comes to skin care products. Make sure you consult with a skin professional before you start using it. Also, always wear a good quality sunscreen during the day while using retinol as your skin becomes more sensitive to the sun. I’ve been using and really enjoying the Dermalogica Age Smart … R…
Very important: Do not use if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not exfoliate or get chemical peels while using retinol.
