Name: Vika Shipalana
Occupation: Director of the Prestige Channel at Pernod-Ricard South Africa
I come from a family of strong women and a belief in The Almighty God, so it goes without saying that I have endeavoured to live a life of purpose, following in the footsteps of my beloved mother, Zukiswa Ntshona. I have an older brother, Lolwethu Bongco, who is my absolute rock and superhero (Mr Muscles .. his body is always perfect, sigh!). My faith has been a compass which has guided my life and it has influenced me as a wife, mother, a work colleague, a friend and citizen of the world.
I grew up in the Eastern Cape in Bisho, studied at Bisho Primary school and did my high school at Kaffrarian Girls High School in King Williams Town. This, and having a very poised and polished grandmother who was also an English teacher, is the reason for my sometimes very conservative approach to overall grooming and etiquette.
My mother was, and still is, very hectic when it comes to cleanliness and well being. She’s never been a make-up girl but has always believed in maintaining a fresh and glowing skin. She is extremely disciplined around her morning and evening cleansing ritual. She believes that how your skin looks has much to do with what you eat and drink, and always encourages me to drink lots of water and eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
Growing up, she only used Esteé Lauder products. I used to watch her every morning and night applying their cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer, all for dry skin. (I have normal-combination skin). Her favourite beauty product was the Advanced Night Repair serum from Estee Lauder, and although she hardly wore any make-up, she’d always have a lipstick on before leaving the house, either in a deep red, or dark brown colour.
The biggest lesson she’s passed on to me certainly is around having and maintaining a well moisturized and glowing skin. This is essential and everything else that falls on top of that needs to enhance rather than detract from who I am.
This is indeed a dream job in as far as it aligns to the things that I am passionate about: luxury, people, beauty, intricate details and overall quality and craftsmanship. It allows me to bring forth what comes naturally to me.
If I was not doing this, I would be somewhere in France or Italy, busy with a luxury venture of sorts and spending long afternoons on a luxury yacht with my husband, Bonnke and 2 daughters, Ntsako and Jodie.
I love all things that focus on hydration and a healthy glowing skin. My day means a full day at the office, which most days can run into evening soirees and private engagements, so to me, whatever I put on, needs to work for a busy working woman.
In the mornings I use the Nutrogena Visibly Clear pink grapefruit daily scrub, followed by the Nutrogena Hydro Boost cleanser (sometimes I’ll use the Guinot Microbiotic toning lotion). This is usually followed by the QMS Medi Cosmetics, Day Collagen, the Guinot Eye Fresh crème, and then a good hydrating moisturizer such as the Esteé Lauder Day Wear Matte. Last but not least, I apply the Eucerin Oil Control, Dry Touch SPF 50+ sun gel-crème.
The evenings are rather tricky as I sometimes forget to wash my face (sorry, Mom) but when I do remember, I usually follow the same routine as above, but I supplement the Nutrogena Hydra Boost cleanser with the QMS Medi Cosmetics Exfoliant fluid followed by the QMS Medi Cosmetics Night Collagen. I then apply the Esteé Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Recovery Complex and the Neutrogena Hydro Boost water gel.
I rarely apply make-up unless I’m attending an event or delivering a high profile presentation. In these instances, I call on my favourite girl (makeup artist) Clara Banx, who always knows what to do and I therefore don’t need to stress.
If I have to apply my own, I generally use a primer from Esteè Lauder, then I apply the Esteé Lauder Double Wear Rich Ginger Stay-In make-up, SPF 10 (foundation). As an alternative to this, I use the MAC Studio Fix NC50 or NW43 compact powder, or the MAC Dark Mineralise Skinfinish. I then apply the MAC Cheeky Bronze Mineralize Skinfinish, MAC Raizin Powder Blush, Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat to highlight, Benefit Browvo! Conditioning primer, Chanel Paris Scuplting Eyebrow Pencil 40 or the Esteé Lauder Brow Now Defining pencil, Yves Saint Laurent Full Metal Liquid Eye Shadow 7, Chanel Paris Inimitable Intense Mascara 10 and the Benefit They’re Real Mascara for the dramatic effect. I prefer a nude lip, so the MAC Half ‘N Half Amplified or the MAC Velvet Teddy A16 are always first prize. Clara loves using the NYX soft matte lip cream, if she’s the one doing my face. If I have to go for a Red, a firm favourite is the MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour Chateau M.
After hours and hours in air conditioned offices and spaces, I worry about my skin feeling dry and looking less radiant. A tired looking face is just not a good look. I just can’t! That, and pigmentation, are the biggest insecurities that I have.
I pray that my daughters come to an early realization that God has given them each, unique and beautiful qualities and that everything they have within them, right now, is enough. That self-love is thee most important thing for them to possess. The rest are extras!
Khanyi Dhlomo for that effortless and timeless beauty that radiates from inside to the outside.
Kerry Washington for that plump baby face and plush glossy lip, on the Series, Scandal (The Fixer). She’s got that “woman on a mission to take over the world … without trying too hard”.. kinda vibe.
Carol Bouwer (who also happens to look like Kerry Washington). Her eyes and that flawless skin… She is absolutely gorgeous!
